CRPE's CAMPAIGNS
The Energy Campaign:
Responsible Power The Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment partnered with
the Latino Issues Forum of San Francisco, Communities for a Better
Environment in Los Angeles, and Environmental Health Coalition
in San Diego to form the Latino Communities Energy Project (LCEP),
funded by the Energy Project and the Hewlett Foundation. LCEP was
necessitated by the discovery that peaker plants and new power
plants throughout the state were being disproportionately located
in Latino communities. LCEP coordinates local efforts into a State-wide
energy agenda. An important policy initiative LCEP supports is
dry cooling to eliminate wasteful water use by power plants. Through
CRPE’s work with LCEP, CRPE worked with residents of Buttonwillow
and Avenal around proposed power plants in their communities, and
developed resources on energy issues affecting Latino communities
in the Central Valley and throughout the State.
