InternshipsThe Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment accepts interns throughout the school year and during the summer in both our Delano and San Francisco offices. We generally have 1-2 interns in Delano, and 3-4 interns in San Francisco, each summer. During the summer, we expect a 10-week commitment for our rigorous internship program. Our interns are involved in all aspects of our environmental justice work: they do legal research and writing, as well as administrative advocacy; draft and present testimony; and meet with clients. Internships sometimes involve travel to our client communities within California. Interns in Delano get significantly more client contact. Summer interns in San Francisco are expected to work in Delano at least one week during the summer; CRPE provides housing for this unique opportunity. QualificationsWe are looking for smart, motivated, creative law students with strong research and writing skills. Successful applicants often – but not always – have experience doing environmental justice work, have worked with poor people and people of color, have a deep commitment to public interest work as demonstrated in their previous employment, and speak Spanish. The summer is the most competitive time for internships. In very rare cases, we hire interns who are not law students. Application procedureTo apply for an internship, send a resume, a brief (<5 page) writing sample, references, and a cover letter to: CRPE generally does not pay its interns, but works with them to secure funding through law school programs. Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
